The ladies of SWE – NY invite you to volunteer with us. We have a couple of open positions. Expand our team with amazing women like yourself who are interested in keeping the spirit of women in engineering alive.

Vice President (Long Island): Reports to President, assists Student Section Liaison in coordinating with the student sections, performs any other duties or responsibilities assigned by the President or normally associated with the office of the Vice President. Volunteers and/or Volunteer Coordinator (VC) update the VP on progress of volunteer projects. VP provides support, assistance, and guidance to Board members. Assists President in managing inquiries. Assists Professional development chair in event planning. Assists in maintaining Section goals in line with SWE mission. Assists in maintaining procedures and Bylaws. Provides support and guidance to board members as needed. Assists Community Outreach committee in planning walk-a-thons.
Estimated time commitment: 4-6 hours per week, plus monthly conference calls, 3 conference calls (fall/winter/spring) with Student Section Liaison and Student counselors, 3 conference calls (fall/winter/spring) with Community Outreach committee, and 2 in-person Board meetings.
*Candidates for NYC vice president and LI vice president must be nominated by another member of the section.*
Membership Chair
Works with the President to keep track of members (new and existing) via the monthly report sent from SWE Headquarters. Finds innovative ways to help increase and retain membership. On a monthly basis, this person will be responsible for sending out welcome letters to new members,
renewal letters, graduating student letters, submit email addresses of new members to the Secretary, and maintain a database of the Section’s membership in conjunction with secretary’s listserv. Plans Annual Student Upgrade Event with assistance from Student Section Liaison and Student Counselors, and New Member Welcome Event with assistance from Volunteer Coordinator.
Estimated time commitment: 1-2 hours per week, plus monthly conference calls, and 2 in-person Board meetings.
Volunteer Coordinator
Responsibilities include managing volunteer programs. Recruit volunteers for programs. Acts as liaison between Board members and volunteers. Provides guidance and assistance to volunteers. Helps establish pilot programs. Updates Vice President on progress of volunteer programs. Assists Membership coordinator to plan New Member Welcome Event.
Estimated time commitment: 1 hour per week, plus monthly conference calls, and 2 in-person Board meetings.
Student Section Liaison (overall lead)
Serves as a connection between the SWE professional Section and the Local Student Sections via the Student Counselors. Compiles and maintains information regarding the Sections from the Counselors, and helps to plan joint events. Works with membership chair to plan Annual Student Upgrade Events. Works closely with Counselors to ensure that students have the opportunity to interact with professional members.
Estimated time commitment: 1-2 hours per week, plus monthly conference calls, 3 conference calls (fall / winter / spring) with student counselors, and 2 in-person Board meetings.
Newsletter
Responsibilities include writing articles about past & upcoming events / Professional & Student section news / topics of general interest to women and / or engineers; obtaining articles from other members and editing those submissions as needed; scheduling due dates, and compiling all material
into 1 electronic newsletter per quarter. Coordinates with the Board for final approval.
Estimated time commitment: Editor - 10 hours per quarterly newsletter, plus monthly conference calls, and 2 in person Board meetings. Volunteers (writers) - 1-2 hours per quarterly newsletter.
Professional Development, NYC
Responsibilities include coordinating NYC meetings such as the location and date. Works with the
Executive Board to plan events, including advertising the event, preparing event flyers, determining the meetings’ attendance and the quantity of food required, attending the event. Chairperson works closely with Survey team to establish meetings that are significant to members. It is highly recommended that the chairperson has served at least one year in the capacity of an Event
coordinator. There are 3-4 Events per year in NYC.
Estimated time commitment: Chairperson – 1-4 hours per week, plus monthly conference calls, 3 Committee conference calls (summer, fall, winter), and 2 in-person Board meetings. Event coordinators - 2 events per year, plus 3 Committee conference calls (summer, fall, winter).
Community Outreach Lead
Coordinates community service events such as the Girl Scouts initiative, charity events, walk-a-thons, science fairs, high school contests, etc.
Estimated time commitment: Chairperson - 1-2 hours per week, plus monthly conference calls, 3 committee conference calls (fall / winter / spring) and 2 in-person Board meetings. Volunteers - 1-2 hours per month, plus 3 committee conference calls (fall / winter / spring).
